What Situations Require Laceration Repair?

If you have a cut or tear in these particular situations, you may require medical intervention to provide laceration repair:

  • The cut or tear appears quite deep.
  • Your muscle, bone, or tendon is exposed.
  • There is dirt on the wound even after you clean it thoroughly.
  • You feel a foreign body or object in the wound.
  • Bleeding doesn’t stop even after you apply pressure on it for a period of time.
  • The wound is on a vulnerable area of the body e.g. eyelids, lips, nose or over a joint,

How to Prepare Before You See the Doctor?

Before you end up seeing the doctor to treat your laceration, here are some actions to take to ease your pain:

  • Put direct pressure on the wound using a clean cloth or gauze. Do not remove it even if it continues to bleed through.
  • Try to place the wound above the heart to make it harder for blood to flow to it.
  • If your bleeding stops, run some water over it to clean it as much as possible.
  • Do not try to touch any exposed bones or organs because you could end up doing more damage.
  • Visit your doctor or emergency department as quickly as possible.

Laceration Repair Treatments

Some treatments that may be used to treat your laceration include:

Dermabond

This is a type of bonding agent used to hold your wound together and can be used on your arms, legs, and face, but it is not as effective over joints and deep cuts.

Steri-strips

These are adhesive strips used to close clean and shallow wounds which can be removed after several days.

Staples

Staples may also be used to repair wounds, typically in the scalp.

Stitches

Plastic surgeons often choose to repair wounds with stitches because they offer the best and most reliable method to close wounds in a cosmetically ideal manner.  Also, stitches are needed to close wounds where deep structures, such as muscle, bone and tendon, are exposed.

Art Plastic Surgery can help you with your laceration repair needs as well as other cosmetic procedures. Just give us a call if you have a cut or wound that needs to be seen by a medical professional.
