Mommy Makeover

Mommy Makeover – Full-Body Rejuvenation for Moms in Paramus at Art Plastic Surgery

Motherhood is as physically challenging as it is emotionally rewarding. If you have children, then you know that pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can take a toll on your body. At Art Plastic Surgery, we offer a comprehensive suite of procedures designed to help your body heal from the stress of childbearing. These procedures, commonly referred to as a mommy makeover, can give you renewed confidence in your appearance.

Board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Luis A. Zapiach and Dr. John T. Cozzone provide a calm, welcoming environment at their Paramus plastic surgery practice. If you’re interested in cosmetic rejuvenation, we’re here to help. We offer a range of both surgical and non-invasive procedures so that we can customize your mommy makeover to fit into your busy schedule.

What’s Included in a Mommy Makeover?

The exact procedures incorporated into your mommy makeover will depend on your individual needs. Some moms choose to target just one or two specific areas of their body, while others decide to pursue a complete makeover. A mommy makeover can be used to correct any of the following cosmetic issues:

  • Loss of breast volume
  • Breast sagging
  • Loose abdominal skin
  • Stubborn belly fat
  • Stretch marks
  • Loose labial tissue
  • Excess fat on the flanks, hips, and thighs
  • Signs of facial aging and skin discoloration

To learn more about the procedures used to treat these issues, you can read the guide below, or reach out to us directly by phone or email.

Body Contouring

Pregnancy tends to change the way fat is distributed on the body. That’s why so many moms are frustrated to discover that even after they lose all their “baby weight,” they retain a small pouch of belly fat. Pregnancy can also lead to the development of diet-resistant fat on the hips, thighs, and flanks. Making matters worse, many moms struggle with loose abdominal skin and damaged abdominal muscles. Folds of loose skin can accentuate a muffin top, while weakened abdominal muscles allow the lower belly to protrude.

When you come in for a consultation, Dr. Zapiach and Dr. Cozzone will examine your abdomen in order to determine whether you need liposuction, tummy tuck surgery, or both procedures (they can easily be combined into one operation).

During liposuction, deposits of stubborn fat are removed through a thin surgical tube called a cannula. This procedure is relatively quick to perform and produces very little scarring, so it’s most patients’ first choice for abdominal sculpting. Liposuction can be used virtually anywhere on the body, including the stomach, hips, thighs, back, breasts, and arms.

Liposuction can’t heal damaged abdominal muscles or remove excess skin, so if those issues are contributing to your cosmetic concerns, you’ll need to consider tummy tuck surgery. During tummy tuck surgery, an incision is made along the bikini line and around the navel. This allows our surgeons to access the abdominal muscles so they can be restored to their pre-pregnancy position and the waist narrowed. They will then remove any loose skin you have, a process that also eliminates most stretch marks.

Breast Enhancement

Many mothers are surprised to discover how dramatically breast size fluctuates during pregnancy. Extra breast volume tends to disappear after breastfeeding, however, leaving the breasts looking deflated. Breast enhancement can restore your pre-pregnancy shape or give you permanently fuller breasts.

Women who want to restore the perkiness of their breasts without increasing their size can choose to have breast lift surgery. A breast lift (also called a mastopexy) is designed to remove loose skin from the breasts and elevate the nipples; it can also be used to make the breasts and areolas more symmetrical.

If you liked the extra breast volume you had during pregnancy, our plastic surgeons can use silicone or saline breast implants or even your own fat to augment your breasts. Implants can occupy excess breast skin, too, making your breasts rounder and perkier. If you have a significant amount of loose skin, our surgeons can combine breast lift and augmentation surgery to create optimal results.

Vaginal Rejuvenation

Delivering a baby causes the tissue of the vagina to stretch significantly. Sometimes, this tissue becomes so lax that it can’t revert to its original shape. The presence of an extended labia minora then leads to chafing, irritation, and feelings of self-consciousness. To treat this issue, patients have the option of using a surgical procedure (labiaplasty) or a non-surgical treatment (ThermiVa™).

During labiaplasty, excess labial tissue is surgically removed and the contours of the vagina are carefully reshaped. After the patient has healed, her labia minora will be properly protected by the labia majora. This eliminates irritation and reduces her risk of infection.

ThermiVa™ doesn’t require surgical incisions. Instead, it uses radio frequency (RF) energy to gently warm the tissues that support the vagina. This stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that makes our connective tissues strong and supple. ThermiVa™ tightens the labia, reduces vaginal dryness, improves sensation, and can even treat stress urinary incontinence.

Facial Rejuvenation

Melasma (dark patches of skin) is a common side-effect of dramatic hormonal shifts. To treat melasma, Dr. Zapiach and Dr. Cozzone use laser skin resurfacing to gently exfoliate away highly pigmented skin cells.

If you would like to incorporate anti-aging therapies into your mommy makeover, just let us know. We can use injectable treatments like Dysport® and dermal fillers to smooth away wrinkles and restore lost facial volume. You may also be interested in trying the Silhouette Instalift, a minimally invasive alternative to facelift surgery. Whatever your personal objectives are, we’ll be happy to include them in your customized treatment plan.

Mommy Makeover FAQ

Your recovery period will vary depending on which procedures you have. Recovery from tummy tuck surgery takes the longest, requiring about two weeks of rest and two months of observing certain activity restrictions. Liposuction, breast augmentation, and breast lift surgery usually only require seven to fourteen days of rest. Non-surgical procedures require no downtime at all, making them the preferred starting point for most moms with young children at home. Visit our various procedure pages to get a more complete idea of what you can expect during recovery.

Before having non-surgical therapies (like injectables and skin resurfacing), you’ll need to be done breastfeeding your baby. For surgical patients, we recommend being at least six months postpartum. You should also be done having children before you have surgery, simply because future pregnancies might compromise your results. Having surgery won’t affect your ability to safely have children, however.

The ideal mommy makeover candidate is a woman who is in good health, has lost most of her baby weight, and doesn’t smoke. When you come in for a consultation, our doctors will review your medical history, including any medications or supplements you take, to make sure you’re ready for surgery.
