POST-WEIGHT LOSS/ POST-BARIATRIC SURGERY
Individuals who have lost large amounts of weight through traditional methods of diet and exercise, and those who have undergone bariatric weight loss procedures such as gastric bypass and adjustable gastric banding, can often experience drooping, excess skin folds, and pockets of fat in many areas of the body. Despite the weight loss, these stubborn issues can affect a patient’s self-confidence, and cause skin infections and problems with hygiene. Post-weight loss or post-bariatric surgery involves procedures designed to address and eliminate these areas of excess skin and fat for a slimmer overall appearance. Our plastic surgeons can help patients attain that tighter, fitter-looking physique to match the way they feel inside with cosmetic enhancement procedures to further enhance and support the lifestyle changes that originally helped them lose the weight.
BODY LIFT PROCEDURES
There are number of procedures for patients to consider post-bariatric surgery, which are designed to address the common issues that arise following dramatic weight loss and help them attain a tighter, more defined body contour. Typically, these various options are combined for a total or partial body lift, depending on the expectations and goals discussed with your New Jersey plastic surgeon during the consultation process. Major procedures include the lower body lift, arm lift, and thigh lift.
A lower body lift involves the removal of excess fat and skin from the midsection, which can include any combination of the following areas: buttocks, hips, love handles, abdomen, and thighs. An incision is made around the belt-line and across the lower part of the stomach, down to the inner thighs. Our plastic surgeons will then remove any excess fat, and tighten the remaining skin for a smoother, more toned appearance.
Also known as a brachioplasty, the arm lift procedure involves an incision made from the armpit to the elbow, allowing our plastic surgeons to remove any excess fat and loose skin. The remaining skin is then re-draped for a tighter appearance, while residual scarring from the incision remains discreet and should fade over time, providing a slimmer overall aesthetic.
A thigh lift eliminates extra fat while tightening the skin around the thighs and hips. Dr. Zapiach, and Dr. Cozzone will make small incisions in the thighs, allowing him to remove the excess fat and tissue and resculpt the area for a tighter, toned appearance.
The time and amount of surgery required for post-bariatric and post-weight loss surgery will determine the overall extent of the procedures. However, Art Plastic Surgery and our plastic surgeons will guide patients throughout the entire process from pre- to post-operative.
POST-WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY RECOVERY
Recovery from post-weight loss surgery will depend on the type and extent of the procedures performed. Full recovery from lower and upper body lifts may take up to two months for the body to completely heal. And while scarring from these procedures is often inevitable, the appearance of scars typically fades over time. Dr. Zapiach and Dr. Cozzone also work to minimize scarring throughout the entire process by placing incisions in areas that will carry the least amount of aesthetic impact on the body. Compression garments and scar reduction products can also help reduce noticeable signs of scarring following weight loss surgery.
