What is Ultherapy®?
The Ultherapy® System is a non-invasive alternative to facelift surgery that uses ultrasound energy to create firmer, tighter skin. Ultherapy® is the only FDA-cleared treatment to non-invasively lift skin, and it is able to reach deep layers to heat tissue without damaging the surface of the skin. This process initiates the body’s natural ability to heal itself. By adopting this ultrasound technology, our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Luis A. Zapiach and Dr. John T. Cozzone, are able to strategically address sagging skin, wrinkles, and fine lines without the need for surgical procedures of any kind: no lasers, no injections.
What Areas of the Body Can Ultherapy® Treat?
Ultherapy® is used to address lax skin caused by gravity, sun exposure, genetics, and other factors related to the natural aging process. The most common body areas and aesthetic concerns that are treated with Ultherapy® include the following:
- Lowered eyebrow position
- Loose neck skin
- Sagging tissue beneath the chin
- Lines and wrinkles on the décolletage
The treatment can be used as a non-surgical method of facial rejuvenation or to prolong the positive effects of cosmetic surgeries.
How Is the Ultherapy® Procedure Performed?
Patented with DeepSEE™ technology, the Ultherapy® System uses ultrasound technology to treat the targeted area(s) with a single, non-invasive device. By producing a thermal coagulative effect in soft tissue, our surgeons are able to treat patients’ most common aesthetic concerns with extreme safety at a depth that was unattainable until now.
The Ultherapy® process begins with your surgeon applying ultrasound gel to the target area and placing the handheld applicator to the skin. Using the system’s imaging technology, your surgeon can visualize deep into the skin layers to determine the best location for directing the thermal energy. By gently heating this soft tissue, Dr. Zapiach and Dr. Cozzone are able to gently lift and tighten the same tissue common surgical procedures typically address.
The procedure commonly takes 60 to 90 minutes to treat the entire face—or about 30 to 60 minutes to treat the brows—and it uses the body’s own ability to gently heal itself and restore the elastic memory to surface skin and soft tissue. The Ultherapy® procedure also promotes the growth of new collagen, which is a natural combatant of the aging process.
What Is the Ultherapy® Recovery Like?
With the Ultherapy® procedure, there is generally no downtime, allowing you to resume your normal activities immediately after leaving our office. Mild redness may occur for the first few hours after treatment, and some patients may develop slight swelling or tenderness in the treated area. Any side effects experienced during Ultherapy® recovery are usually mild and temporary.
Results are typically seen over a two- to three-month period as the skin gradually tightens and replaces old collagen with new, stronger collagen. While there is usually no replacement for surgical procedures if patients are expecting dramatic results, Ultherapy® presents an alternative for those individuals hoping to avoid more invasive or complex surgical procedures, such as facelift or eyelid surgery. Ultherapy® can also be combined with other plastic surgery treatments during a Mommy Makeover.

How Long Do Ultherapy® Results Last?
Some patients may see their skin begin to tighten immediately after they receive their Ultherapy® treatment. This should continue to improve over the course of two to three months as the body heals and new collagen growth causes a lifting effect in the treated area. A single treatment is usually sufficient for most patients to achieve noticeable results. However, if you have a more advanced degree of skin laxity, or your body cannot rebuild an adequate amount of collagen, additional treatments may be recommended to help you achieve optimal results.
The longevity of your Ultherapy® results will ultimately depend on your body’s ability to regenerate collagen. Since the skin will continue to age after any cosmetic treatment, future touch-up sessions may help you maintain the tightening and lifting results of your Ultherapy® procedure, allowing you to age at a more graceful rate.
How Much Does Ultherapy® Cost?
The most significant factors that will affect the cost of your Ultherapy® treatment include the number of areas for which you are receiving treatment, the size of these target regions, and the number of follow-up sessions you choose to undergo. Since each Ultherapy® procedure is customized to the unique needs of each patient, the cost will vary from case to case. To receive a personalized price quote, you will need to schedule a consultation with Dr. Zapiach or Dr. Cozzone. During this appointment, your surgeon will perform a physical assessment and discuss what you hope to achieve from treatment, as well as provide you with detailed breakdown of the overall estimated cost.
