At his New Jersey plastic surgery practice, Dr. Luis Zapiach discusses the continuing surge in popularity of minimally and non-invasive procedures. Whether his patients are considering the innovative skin tightening procedure known as Ulthera™, BOTOX Injections®, or dermal fillers, Dr. Zapiach says he not only expects the popularity of such procedures to continue to expand, but also believes the overall consumer approval of cosmetic procedures in the U. S. will continue to rise.
According to the latest statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than half of all Americans now approve of cosmetic enhancement. Dr. Luis A. Zapiach, a board-certified plastic surgeon in New Jersey, says the continued popularity of aesthetic enhancement is likely the result of continued technological advancement in minimally and non-invasive procedures that allow patients to achieve a subtle transformation without the risks or costs of traditional surgical procedures such as liposuction or facelift.
The ASAPS study shows more than 9.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2010, 83% of which were non-surgical in nature. Dr. Zapiach says Ulthera™, designed to create firmer skin through the use of ultrasound technology, provides his patients with a safe and effective alternative to other facial rejuvenation and surgical cosmetic procedures.
The use of the FDA-approved ultrasound technology allows Dr. Zapiach to treat the deepest layers of the skin’s support structure without disrupting the uppermost layers of skin. Following the procedure, he says the skin begins to heal itself and produce collagen, which continues to tighten the skin and improve the appearance of sagging, wrinkles, and fine lines. Over the course of two to three months following the procedure, the skin’s natural healing response will continue to trigger the production of new collagen and gradually strengthen and tone the skin to create a younger aesthetic appearance.
While Dr. Zapiach stresses there is no substitute for surgical procedures when patients desire dramatic cosmetic enhancement results, he says minimally and non-invasive procedures like Ulthera™ present viable alternatives to traditional surgical procedures. He adds that he is unsure of which came first, but believes the popularity of cosmetic enhancement in general will continue to rise as non-surgical procedures become increasingly effective.
