Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)
What Is Rhinoplasty?
Many people who have had lifelong self-image issues with the appearance of their nose, as well as those who have breathing difficulties and other problems with nasal function, can benefit from rhinoplasty (nose reshaping surgery). Rhinoplasty is a customizable procedure designed to correct aesthetic imperfections in the nose and bring it into better balance and harmony with other facial features. This popular treatment can also improve functionality by correcting a deviated septum or other structural issues, ultimately making it easier to breathe through the nose.
Our New Jersey plastic surgeons—Dr. John T. Cozzone and Dr. Luis A. Zapiach—are highly skilled and experienced in performing rhinoplasty. By tailoring a treatment plan based on your specific needs and goals, they can help you improve both the appearance and function of your nose with long-lasting, natural-looking results. If you are interested in rhinoplasty, please continue reading the information provided on this page or contact Art Plastic Surgery to schedule a consultation.
What Can Rhinoplasty Accomplish?
Rhinoplasty can improve a number of conditions associated with the nose. This procedure has the ability to:
- Thin or widen the nasal tip
- Increase or decrease the projection/angle of the nasal tip
- Straighten and/or adjust the size/width of the nasal bridge
- Reshape the nostrils
- Correct nasal deformities
- Realign a deviated septum
The final result can be an enhanced, more proportionate nasal appearance and/or improved nasal breathing.
How Is the Rhinoplasty Procedure Performed?
The rhinoplasty procedure typically begins with incisions made either outside or inside the nostrils. One of the benefits of rhinoplasty is that outside incisions can be made along the natural creases of the nose, making scarring virtually invisible. Our plastic surgeons will separate the bone and cartilage of the nose, and reshape them to meet your ultimate goals. The incisions are then closed, and a temporary splint will help the nose retain its new shape as it heals. The nose may need to be packed with gauze for a short period of time to control bleeding and stabilize the septum. The procedure usually takes from one to two hours to complete and can be performed as an outpatient treatment.
What Is Rhinoplasty Recovery Like?
Some swelling and bruising can be expected after rhinoplasty, and patients will need to keep the head elevated for about a day after surgery to help facilitate the resolution of these symptoms. Medication can be prescribed to control pain and discomfort. The nasal splint and stitches are typically removed about a week or two after rhinoplasty. Most patients are able to resume normal daily activities about one week after the procedure, though strenuous activities like vigorous exercise, heavy lifting, and physical sports will need to be avoided for several more weeks to allow for optimal healing.
How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost?
The total cost of rhinoplasty is influenced by a variety of different factors, including the following:
- The quantity and complexity of the aesthetic concerns or structural issues being addressed
- Fees for the anesthesia and operating facility
- The plastic surgeon’s credentials, surgical skill, and experience
- The specific technique employed during surgery
- The city and/or geographic region of the practice
- Whether or not insurance provides full or partial coverage
In the event rhinoplasty is performed for medical reasons—i.e. to correct breathing complications caused by a deviated septum—the procedure may be fully or partially covered by insurance, though this will depend on one’s specific healthcare plan and provider. For those interested in financial aid, our practice offers several payment plan options via CareCredit® that can make rhinoplasty an affordable reality for virtually any budget.
What Is Asian Rhinoplasty?
Many individuals of Asian descent desire to augment various aspects of the nose—such as the nasal bridge—to achieve improved harmony with the rest of their facial features. To do this, our doctors can utilize a combination of materials, including implants and/or tissue grafts taken from elsewhere on the patient’s body. In all cases, every effort is made to achieve the individual’s desired results while preserving unique features of their ethnicity. Is Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Possible?
Not everyone seeking to enhance the appearance of their nose needs or desires to undergo surgery to achieve the look they want. As an alternative to surgical rhinoplasty, our board-certified plastic surgeons offer “liquid rhinoplasty”—a non-surgical treatment involving the use of injectable fillers to reshape different nasal characteristics for an improved contour and facial balance. Although the volumizing effects of the selected filler(s) are not permanent and will gradually diminish over time, an optimal outcome can be maintained long-term by receiving touch-up injections on a periodic basis.
It is important to note that liquid rhinoplasty is not typically able to address all concerns or achieve as significant of an enhancement as surgical rhinoplasty for every patient. As a result, an in-person consultation with one of our doctors will be necessary to determine the most effective technique for your unique needs and goals.
