Breast Augmentation: Choosing Saline, Silicone, or Fat Transfer

If you are considering breast augmentation with implants, there are two main types of implants to choose from. Saline implants consist of an outer shell constructed from silicone and filled with saline solution. Typically requiring only a small incision, saline implants are filled once they are already inside the breast pocket, allowing your plastic surgeon to custom-tailor the volume while minimizing scarring. Conversely, silicone implants are composed of a thick silicone gel for an exceptionally natural look and feel. As an added benefit, silicone implants may also minimize the risks of rippling or deflation.

For women seeking to enhance the size and shape of their breasts without implants, there is a third option available at our practice. Utilizing an innovative technique known as fat transfer, fat tissues can often be harvested from one area of the body and reinjected into the breasts for added volume and improved contour. For example, excess fat can first be removed via liposuction from the abdomen, hips, or another region that has an ample accumulation of excess fatty tissue. Once extracted, the fat is purified and then injected into the breasts for an optimal result. This procedure is known as natural breast augmentation.

During the consultation process, your plastic surgeon will review your medical history, perform a physical exam, and thoroughly discuss your unique cosmetic goals to help you determine which type of breast augmentation may be most effective for your unique needs and desires.
