Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia affects 40 to 60 percent of men and typically begins in adolescence. The condition is characterized by an enlarged appearance caused by excess skin, fat, and sometimes glandular tissue in the breasts. While the exact cause of gynecomastia is unknown, it can lead to severe lack of self-esteem, and possible to depression. Some possible causes of the condition include:

  • Obesity
  • Natural aging
  • Some prescription medications and medication containing estrogen
  • Anabolic steroid use
  • Use of herbal testosterone additives
  • Klinefelter Syndrome
  • Gilbert’s Syndrome
  • Puberty
  • Testicular hormone production irregularities
  • Problems with liver function

Gynecomastia is a condition that can be corrected with male breast reduction surgery by recontouring the chest area to provide a more toned-looking chest and increased self-confidence.

While obesity can be a cause of gynecomastia, those patients who qualify for male breast reduction surgery are often not considered obese. In fact, patients who are considered overweight are often encouraged to try traditional weight loss methods before considering breast reduction surgery. As consumption of alcohol and marijuana are also considered as contributing factors to gynecomastia, patients who consume either substance are advised to consult their physician before deciding on male breast reduction surgery.

In a private consultation, our plastic surgeons will discuss all possible options with his patients regarding male breast reduction surgery. They encourage patients to ask questions and they address any concerns they may have to fully develop a treatment plan that addresses each patient’s individual goals and expectations.

Male Breast Reduction Procedure

The male breast reduction procedure can be performed in a number of ways. For patients who are candidates, Dr. Cozzone or Dr. Zapiach can perform a minimal-incision liposuction technique utilizing advanced surgical equipment. This technique requires the creation of only two small ports, hidden at the sides of the chest, to suction out excess fat cells.

For a more traditional male breast reduction procedure, our plastic surgeons will make small incision hidden in the armpit or around the areola. Excess skin, fat, and/or glandular tissue will then be removed, and if necessary, liposuction will be employed to remove any excess fat. While the length of the procedure depends on the extent of each patient’s condition, the male breast reduction procedure is typically performed as an outpatient surgery under general anesthesia, and can take anywhere from one to two hours to complete.

Male Breast Reduction Recovery

Patients can expect some swelling and bruising, but any discomfort should dissipate fairly quickly. Recipients of male breast reduction surgery can usually expect to return to their normal routines within the first few days after the procedure.
