Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
What Is a Breast Lift?
Breast lift surgery—or mastopexy—is a cosmetic procedure designed to remove excess, sagging skin and elevate the breasts to a more youthful position on the chest wall. The procedure also involves reshaping breast tissue to achieve an improved breast contour, as well as resizing and/or repositioning the nipple-areolar complexes (if necessary).
Mastopexy is one of the most common breast enhancement treatments performed by our board-certified plastic surgeons at Art Plastic Surgery. Using state-of-the-art techniques, they can help you eliminate sagging and droopiness in the breasts for a tighter, “perkier,” more youthful appearance.
What Causes Breast Sagging?
Breast sagging and drooping are common aesthetic issues that can be caused by a number of factors, including:
- Weight loss
- The natural effects of aging
- Recent pregnancy
A breast lift smooths out the skin of the breasts and lifts them to a higher position, giving them a “perkier,” rejuvenated appearance.
Do I Need a Breast Lift with Implants?
Breast lift surgery can often be combined with traditional breast augmentation for women who would like to add fullness or restore volume to the breasts in addition to addressing sagginess. In these cases, breast implants will typically be placed at the time of breast lift surgery, helping to enhance the size, contour, and overall projection of the breasts.
For women who would like to add and/or restore breast volume but are not interested in implants, our plastic surgeons can also combine mastopexy with an innovative augmentation technique designed to increase the size of the breasts using fat tissue. Known as natural breast augmentation or breast augmentation with fat transfer, this method involves harvesting excess fat from one area of the body and reinjecting it into the breasts until the desired volume is achieved.
How Is Breast Lift Surgery Performed?
Our New Jersey plastic surgeons have performed many breast lift procedures and they are committed to giving you results that not only look beautiful, but also natural. The procedure begins with an incision made around the areola (the dark-pigmented area of skin surrounding the nipple) down to the breast crease. Our plastic surgeons will then remove excess skin, tighten the remainder, and relocate the nipples to a higher position. Ultimately, the goal is to give your breasts a much smoother appearance, free from excess skin that causes them to take on a “sagging” aesthetic.
Breast lift surgery usually takes no more than two hours, and can be completed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.
What Is Breast Lift Recovery Like?
Patients can expect some degree of swelling and bruising after breast lift surgery, but this should fade as the breasts continue to heal during recovery. Pain and discomfort can be controlled with medication. Normal daily activities can often be resumed after about one week; however, Dr. Cozzone and Dr. Zapiach typically advise patients to avoid strenuous activities for the first few weeks after a breast lift procedure. There will be some scarring after surgery, but this should fade with time. Our plastic surgeons are highly skilled with making any residual scarring as light as possible.
How Much Does Breast Lift Cost?
The total cost of breast lift surgery is made up of several different elements, including:
- The extent of skin removal and tissue contouring needed
- Whether or not treatment is combined with a breast augmentation
- Any applicable medications (such as pain medicine)
- Fees for the plastic surgeon, anesthesia, and hospital (or operating facility)
- The credentials, skill, and experience of the plastic surgeon
- The geographic location of the practice
Since breast lift surgery is a custom-tailored procedure, an in-person consultation with one of our plastic surgeons is required to determine exact mastopexy pricing. At this time, your doctor can perform a thorough assessment of your specific needs and goals, enabling him to develop an individualized surgical plan. Once this plan is formulated, he will be able to provide a close estimate of what you can expect your breast lift to cost. For individuals who are interested in financial aid, we offer various financing and payment plan options through CareCredit®, which can also be discussed with you at the time of the consultation.
Will My Breast Lift Scars Be Noticeable?
Scarring is an inevitable part of any procedure that requires incisions, and breast lift surgery is no different. That said, Dr. Cozzone and Dr. Zapiach do everything in their power to limit the visibility of mastopexy scars by using meticulous surgical and incision closure techniques. In addition, they provide every patient with instructions and recommendations for how to help ensure the incisions heal properly for an optimal final appearance. Ultimately, breast lift scars can be concealed under most bathing suit and underwear varieties, and the vast majority of women say the benefits of the procedure far surpass any issues they initially had about scarring.
Can I Get a Breast Lift Without Surgery?
Despite claims that certain “breast lift exercises” can achieve the results of a breast lift without surgery, mastopexy is the only effective solution for treating moderate to severe breast sagging. This is because lax, excess skin is mainly responsible for breast drooping, and the only way to sufficiently address this issue is through surgical skin tightening and removal.
