When Should I Consider Revision Blepharoplasty?

Are you dissatisfied with the cosmetic and/or functional outcomes of a previous eyelid surgery? Some of the most common complaints patients have when their primary blepharoplasty was conducted unsatisfactorily by their former surgeon include asymmetries in the shape of the eyes, irritation in and around the eyes, issues with closing the eyelids completely, and an overdone, undesirable appearance. If you are experiencing any of these concerns, or if you are bothered by an entirely separate issue that resulted from a prior eyelid surgery, you may be an excellent candidate for revision blepharoplasty.

Also referred to as reconstructive eyelid surgery, revision blepharoplasty is a technique that can be customized to address and correct specific problems caused by your original cosmetic eyelid procedure. In addition to the concerns mentioned above, these issues can also include conspicuous scarring, as well as an excess or shortage of tissues resulting from an under- or overcorrection of the eyelid region during the initial surgery.

Depending on your particular concerns, it is typically advised that you wait at least six months to a full year before considering revisional blepharoplasty. Reason being, many individuals find the issues that initially bother them most tend to soften and fade over time, sometimes to the point that they no longer desire to have them improved or corrected.

Ultimately, if your are unhappy with the results of a previous blepharoplasty procedure, I strongly encourage you to consult a board certified plastic surgeon who has great experience with revision eyelid surgery. After a thorough examination, he or she should be able to help you determine if reconstructive blepharoplasty may be right for you, as well as how long to wait before the procedure can be performed safely and effectively for an ideal outcome.
