Breast Reduction

What Is Breast Reduction?

Medically referred to as reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction surgery is a procedure designed to remove skin, fat, and glandular tissue from the breasts to achieve a more proportionate breast size for one’s body. In addition, the breast reduction procedure can be a very effective way to alleviate the debilitating and sometimes embarrassing issues of having overly large breasts.

Both men and women typically contact Art Plastic Surgery regarding breast reduction surgery because they are experiencing problems often associated with large breasts and are looking for a way to correct these concerns. New Jersey plastic surgeons John T. Cozzone, MD and Luis A. Zapiach, MD are committed to helping patients increase their comfort level and achieve a more flattering overall appearance with a safe and effective breast reduction procedure.

If you are troubled by excessively large breasts and are seeking a solution, contact Art Plastic Surgery online or by phone today to schedule a consultation for breast reduction.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is designed to help women alleviate a number of concerns related to having overly large breasts, including:

  • Excessive sagging or drooping
  • Back, shoulder, and neck pain
  • Self-consciousness
  • Indentations caused by the bra-strap
  • Inability to wear certain types of clothing
  • Undesired attention

At the time of your initial consultation, you will have the chance to discuss the above issues with our plastic surgeons, along with any other concerns you may have regarding the effects of having large breasts that have affected your appearance, self-esteem, and overall comfort. At the first visit with our board-certified plastic surgeons, you will also have a chance to discuss the various aspects of breast reduction surgery and any specific concerns about the experience.

For men who are affected by overly large breasts (gynecomastia), male breast reduction surgery is also available at Art Plastic Surgery. This can be an effective procedure for addressing similar symptoms and restoring a more masculine appearance to the chest.

Do I Need a Breast Reduction and Lift?

The majority of women who need a breast reduction also need a breast lift. This is because the removal of excess tissue and fat from the breasts will usually leave behind extra skin, creating a sagging or drooping appearance if left unaddressed. Fortunately, a breast lift is performed as part of the breast reduction procedure, as opposed to two separate treatments. Generally speaking, once tissue and fat has been removed during the operation, redundant skin will be excised and the remaining breast tissue will be lifted and recontoured to achieve an optimal appearance.

How Is the Breast Reduction Procedure Performed?

Breast reduction surgery is typically performed on those patients who are fully developed. In addition, if any of our patients have any concerns regarding other medical conditions, including breastfeeding in the future, our plastic surgeons and qualified staff can answer any questions during the consultation.

During the procedure, Dr. Zapiach or Dr. Cozzone will make an anchor-like incision from the area of the nipple to the crease of the breast. Excess fat, tissue, and skin are removed to reflect the expected size reduction discussed by the doctor and his patient. The nipple and areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) are then repositioned. Once the breast is reshaped with skin from around the areola, the incisions are closed.

The entire breast reduction procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, under general anesthesia, and lasts between two to four hours.

What Is Breast Reduction Recovery Like?

Recovery from breast reduction surgery normally requires about two weeks of recuperation before daily routines can be resumed, but heavy lifting or strenuous activity should be avoided for at least three to four weeks. The staff at Art Plastic Surgery will fit patients with an elastic bandage or surgical bra that is designed to bind the breasts for a few days after surgery. This process should facilitate the healing process and ensure the best results. If necessary, some patients can be fitted with drainage tubes to remove excess fluid. Stitches are typically removed after one week; however, the surgical bra must be worn for about a month following the surgery. During their recovery time, patients can expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising, but these can often be alleviated with medication.

How Much Does Breast Reduction Cost?

The overall cost of breast reduction is comprised of various components, including:

  • The quantity of fat, glandular tissue, and skin that needs to be removed
  • Any medications that may be needed before or after surgery
  • Plastic surgeon, anesthesia, and operating center fees
  • The experience and expertise of the plastic surgeon
  • The city and/or region in which the practice is located

Dr. Zapiach and Dr. Cozzone customize every breast reduction procedure at our practice, so an in-person consultation is necessary to determine specific pricing. Following an extensive physical evaluation and thorough discussion of your needs/goals, a personalized quote that itemizes every cost affecting the total estimated breast reduction price can be provided.

Some cases of breast reduction surgery can be covered by insurance, and we can assist you with determining how much coverage is available. Art Plastic Surgery encourages all our patients to contact their insurance provider in addition to speaking with our staff. If your breast reduction is not covered by insurance, our practice offers several financing options through CareCredit® to help make treatment as affordable as possible.

Will I Have Breast Reduction Scars?

There will be some degree of scarring after breast reduction surgery; however, our plastic surgeons make every effort to help ensure the visibility of scars is as minimal as possible. To do this, they utilize careful surgical and incision closure techniques during the procedure, and they provide detailed instructions on how to properly care for the incisions throughout the healing and scar maturation process. Due to their location, all breast reduction scars can typically be hidden underneath most bathing suit and underwear styles, and most patients note that any concerns they initially had about scarring were far outweighed by the numerous physical and psychological benefits the procedure afforded.
