Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction surgery is designed to help women alleviate a number of concerns related to having overly large breasts, including:
- Excessive sagging or drooping
- Back, shoulder, and neck pain
- Indentations caused by the bra-strap
- Inability to wear certain types of clothing
At the time of your initial consultation, you will have the chance to discuss the above issues with our plastic surgeons, along with any other concerns you may have regarding the effects of having large breasts that have affected your appearance, self-esteem and overall comfort. At the first visit with our board-certified plastic surgeons, you will also have a chance to discuss the various aspects of breast reduction surgery and any specific concerns about the experience.
For men who are affected by overly large breasts (gynecomastia), male breast reduction surgery is also available at Art Plastic Surgery. This can be an effective procedure for addressing similar symptoms and restoring a more masculine appearance to the chest.
Some cases of breast reduction surgery can be covered by insurance, and we can assist you with determining how much coverage is available. Art Plastic Surgery encourages all our patients to contact their insurance provider in addition to speaking with our staff.
Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast reduction surgery is typically performed on those patients who are fully developed. In addition, if any of our patients have any concerns regarding other medical conditions including breastfeeding in the future, our plastic surgeons and qualified staff can answer any questions during the consultations.
During the procedure, Dr. Zapiach or Dr. Cozzone will make an anchor like incision from the area of the nipple to the crease of the breast. Excess fat, tissue, and skin are removed to reflect the expected size reduction discussed by the doctor and his patient. Then the nipple and areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) are repositioned. Once the breast is reshaped with skin from around the areola, the incisions are closed.
The entire breast reduction procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, under general anesthesia, and lasts between two to four hours.
Breast Reduction Recovery
Recovery from breast reduction surgery normally requires about two weeks of recuperation before daily routines can be resumed, but heavy lifting or strenuous activity should be avoided for at least three to four weeks. The staff at Art Plastic Surgery will fit their patients with an elastic bandage or surgical bra that is designed to bind the breasts for a few days after surgery. This process should facilitate the healing process and ensure the best results. If necessary, some patients can be fitted with drainage tubes to remove excess fluid. Stitches are typically removed after one week; however, the surgical bra must be worn for about a month following the surgery. During their recovery time, patients can expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising, but these can often be alleviated with medication.
